BeeSTAR spent two days in early September at the NorCal Honeybee Expo in Redding, California, at the northern end of the Central Valley where the plains meet the mountains. The company came away with a new trial partner in the region and, just as valuably, hours of direct conversation with the commercial beekeepers who run pollination in the world’s largest almond producing state.
What Californian beekeepers said
The conversations were direct. Operators said they want what digital beekeeping promises: fewer wasted trips, earlier warnings and better records. Many had tried monitoring technology before and been let down, by sensors that stopped reporting, apps built for engineers rather than beekeepers, and data that never turned into a decision. Their scepticism was earned, and it shaped every discussion at the BeeSTAR table.

“They did not ask about features. They asked whether it works when the truck is two hours from the nearest yard. That is exactly the right question, and it is the standard we build to.”
Ray Kwon, Founder and CEO, BeeSTAR
The result
Several beekeepers brought real operational problems to the table, and working through them on the spot became the most productive sessions of the event. When the BeeSTAR approach was laid out, essential information only, decisions hive by hive and load by load, and data owned by the beekeeper, several operators expressed clear interest in using the platform, and one regional operation signed on as a new trial partner.
The visit confirmed a simple read of the US market: American beekeepers do not need convincing that the industry has problems. They need proof that this generation of technology is different, and trials on their own hives are how that proof gets made.
