The Story Behind Beestar

Much of the food on your plate exists because a bee visited a flower. In commercial farming, that bee almost always comes from a managed hive, looked after by a beekeeper. This is the story of why we think those hives, and the people who keep them, deserve better tools.

Beestar began in 2022

BeeSTAR began in 2022 in Australia, and it did not begin with pollination. It began with honey, and a simple question: how do you know it is real?

That question led us to the people who make honey

The more time we spent with beekeepers, the more we saw a bigger problem. Everything a beekeeper needs to know about a colony was locked inside the hive, waiting for the next visit. An industry the whole food system depends on was running on memory, paper and instinct.

So we changed course

We put monitoring technology on commercial hives, season after season, across every Australian state, and we listened to the people using it. Two and a half years of continuous fieldwork later, the product is what they told us and what the data showed us.

Where we are today

Today our platform runs on more than 1,800 commercial hives, with deployments in Australia and early work in the United States, New Zealand and Canada.

Here is the uncomfortable truth

We are not losing bees, we are losing beekeepers

Keeping hives alive costs more time and money every year, and beekeepers are leaving the industry faster than they can be replaced. Fewer beekeepers means fewer managed hives, less pollination and less food. And as beekeeping gets harder, pollination costs the farm more every season.

It is a structural cycle, not a seasonal problem.

You cannot fix that cycle with a gadget, and you cannot fix it by squeezing beekeepers harder. You fix it by making beekeeping a business worth staying in. Give experienced judgement better information and more time, keep the data in the hands of the people who produce it, and prove everything in the field before selling it.

That is the company we set out to build.
